Three Important Life Lessons We Can Take Away From Autumn

Ways Fall Improves Mental Health

Many people use this time of the year to go outside and get active. And while it’s important to focus on our physical health, it’s just as important (if not more) to focus on our mental health.

If you think about nature and how it responds to the changing of the seasons, there is no better time than autumn to guide us on how to respond to change in our own lives and promote a better state of mind.

Here are three key insights we can gather from this fall season and use to improve our own outlook on life:

Autumn Takeaway #1: It’s a time to refocus on your goals

Over the last couple months, you have taken time off work for family vacations and enjoyed delicious (but probably unhealthy) foods at summer cookouts. But now that fall is here, it’s time to refocus on your goals that you may have forgotten about during those summer months.

We have all certain goals that we want to achieve in all aspects of our life. These can range from building our career, strengthening relationships, or getting back into shape.

Whatever your goals and resolutions may be, it’s important to take time to develop a strategy and action plan now instead of waiting until January 1st. That way you can run into the New Year with momentum!

Autumn Takeaway #2: It’s a time to embrace change

Whether it’s spending more time outdoors in the crisp air or appreciating the fail foliage, autumn is one of the more enjoyable times of the year for many. But for some, this change is not as enjoyable.

The days become shorter and our schedules become busier. But even with the aspects of this season that we may find unfavorable, it’s a lot easier to handle when you look at it with an optimistic outlook.

Take the changing of the leaves for example. It would be very bleak to only think about it as beautiful leaves dying and leaving the trees bare during the bitter cold winter. Instead we should remember that when those leaves die, they eventually become fertile mulch to allow new growth in the spring.

While it may feel uncomfortable at the time, change might be a catalyst for something beautiful in your life down the road. All you have to do is embrace it!

Autumn Takeaway #3: It’s a time to take on new challenges

Fall is considered the season of change for a reason. The leaves heavy contrast in colors stimulates the brain and signals that we are experiencing something new. Take advantage of this season to experience some new and exciting challenges in your own life.

If you think about your favorite music genre, food, hobbies, or even personal beliefs – these are all most likely different than what they were 5 years ago. That’s because you allowed yourself to step outside your comfort zone and broaden your horizons.

While you develop a habit for continually trying new things, fall is a special time to remind us of the importance of exploring so you can continue to grow as a person.
